Whistle while you work

Work days until school begins: 3; Desks currently in my room: 2

Work days have begun with a vengeance. I didn’t realize how hard it was going to be for me to set up my walls this year. Most of the things I have gathered over the past three years are strictly Social Studies related. I could still put them up, of course, but I really like to use my space to enhance my classes, not just to “decorate.” My new room has very high ceilings, which frustrates me, because it means that there is a lot of white space at the top of my walls that I can’t really utilize effectively. I need to track down a taller ladder…

We had our first departmental meeting yesterday, and I was pleased with how it went. Everyone contributed (there didn’t seem to be any power struggles going on between the returning members of the department, which is a good sign) and I felt like the things that were discussed were relevant. The meeting didn’t dissolve into a big bitch fest which was both nice and unexpected. I am really starting to be concerned about my English II classes; in addition to Literature, that class is also supposed to prepare students for the state writing test in March. That is bad enough, but I found out at our meeting that I will also need to help the kids pick topics and begin research for their graduation projects. This is a new initiative in the state of North Carolina, and there seems to be a lot of general confusion over how, exactly, this whole thing is supposed to look.

Every day I kick myself for not paying more attention to the classrooms of my fellow CMs who taught English. This feels a little like my first year all over again with the feelings of, “I don’t even know where to begin with this curriculum” creeping over me. I am maintaining confidence in my hard won teaching abilities, but I really need to get down to it with this subject and just immerse myself in it. Swimming in the English sea…
